Toothache pain after having a tooth extraction.

There are times when your child may need to have a tooth removed, either due to decay or as a part of orthodontic services. Many teens will also have their wisdom teeth removed. The amount of post operative pain can will very depending in part on whether the tooth extracted was a baby tooth or a permanent tooth and whether the tooth was infected or impacted.

Generally the dentist would have used a local anesthetic to eliminate feeling in the area of the extraction, so your child may will not feel any pain for several hours after the extraction procedure.

By applying ice to the area it will help to reduce swelling and may reduce pain afterward. Ask the dentist whether you should administer an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen, before the local anesthetic wears off. In many cases, this is enough to ward off pain after an extraction.
